Solid Food, Round 1

We used to be able to feed the girls their 6am bottles on the weekend, and then get them to go back to sleep for at least another hour or so. Getting back in bed was always our weekend treat. But lately, those ladies have different ideas, and are apparently on to our plan of trying to get more sleep. So, last Saturday, I thought it would be a good time to start introducing rice cereal, hoping to buy us a few more minutes of sleep.

Julie loved it. She slurps it up, but doesn't quite understand that it's not a bottle - - so she gets frustrated that she can't eat as fast as she wants to.

Emma's not quite sold on the idea. I think she's holding out for something better.

Rebecca could take it or leave it. She's not crazy about sitting up in the Bumbo chair, and she kind of leans, which makes it hard to feed her.

Because I know it's coming, I started making baby food last weekend, too. So far, we've got sweet potatoes, squash, apples, pears, avocado, banana, and watermelon in the freezer. I am buying some jarred stuff for convenience, but will hopefully be able to make a big chunk of it ... because we're going to go through so much... It was a little intimidating at first, but it's actually not bad at all. And I am strangely satisfied by watching the food processor puree stuff. The food processor has been used more in the last week than it has in the last 4 years.

Some sweet potato and squash:

Greg's sister was also here with us last weekend, cooking and helping us take care of the girls.

Trying not to go a month without a post again

Swimming was on the agenda for the last weekend in June. We got a little inflatable pool (that's big enough for all of us to get in, since the girls can't sit up yet), let it warm in the sun all day, and then took the girls to test it out late in the afternoon.
Rebecca
Emma and Julie
We had waited until the pool was in the shade (since the girls still aren't supposed to be in direct sun, or wear sunscreen), and as we were going outside, we noticed that it was clouding over. After about 10 minutes or so, the girls had had enough, so we started getting ready to go inside ... and sure enough it started raining. Then, "Was that thunder?" "Yeah." So we scrambled, but of course all safe and sound.

My brother Steve and his girlfriend Stephanie came to visit us for the 4th of July weekend, to meet the girls. It's still so weird to think of my brothers as uncles. It never occurred to me, throughout my whole pregnancy. It wasn't until a few days after they were born, and as weird as it was to adjust to being a parent, it was almost weirder to think of my brothers as uncles.

Steve and Steph did great with the girls, and even let us get out of the house for a couple of hours on Friday to get some dinner and go to Costco. We just hung around the house on the 4th and did some grilling. We turned on the fireworks on tv later, but I don't think anyone really watched them.

We also tried swimming again on the 4th.  Julie was not interested this time, and just started screaming.  Steph took her and walked around with her for a while.

Look at those tears!

Julie tends to get over tired, and then really fussy, which just makes her even more tired, which makes her more fussy ... it's a vicious cycle. One of the things that calms her down? Dad singing the Pink Panther theme to her. (Last night I resorted to putting her in the car seat and driving around for 20 minutes.)

Emma was the first to figure out the toy hanging from her car seat - when you pull on the moose's legs, he rattles and retracts back up.  Now we hear that in the car all the time.  (She taught Rebecca to do it.)  It weird to feel like I taught her that - a few weeks ago while we were eating lunch while out shopping, I grabbed her hand a bunch of times and helped her pull.  And a few days later, she was doing it on her own.  Completely different than my futile attempts of trying to teach the cats to use the scratching post.

Rebecca rolled from her back to her belly last Sunday, so now all 3 of them have rolled in both directions. I think they're still sort of surprised when they do it, judging by the looks on their faces.  She seems to be absorbing things like a sponge lately - from the hanging toy on her car seat, to really starting to reach for toys.

Long Overdue

Wow, I don't know if I've ever gone so long without blogging. No posts at all in June?!? The longer time goes on, a blog update just seems to be a bigger and bigger task, and then ends up getting pushed down lower on the list. So this may be long. Bear with me.

I battled a cold that started like allergies for about 2 weeks. I probably picked it up from Julie, since she was the first to become congested. Of course we all ended up with it. To add to the fun, I melted cough drops in my pants pocket somehow. And it made a huge sticky mess that eventually fused my pocket together. And then I forgot and put the pants on again later in the week.

I got mistaken for a teenager a few weeks ago at "take your kid to work" day; perhaps the glare of the sunlight off of my gray hairs temporarily blinded the security guard, as she chased after me to tell me I couldn't go through the gate when Greg and I left for lunch.

Greg and I have been putting way too much energy into doing battle with the insurance company. We are finally close to resolving the issue of the neonatologists at the hospital not being in network. Yeah. Crazy. Like we had a choice. If the girls were born anywhere else, they would have been transferred - it's the only level 3 NICU around. The hospital and nurses were in network, but the neonatologists are their own practice employed by the hospital. We are, however, no closer to resolving the issue of our out-of-pocket maximum being met; it's a joint medical-prescription out-of-pocket max. But, that would require the insurance company communicating with the prescription drug company. And it's not working. No matter who I call.

At the end of May (so the girls were a little over 4 months), we went and had some pictures taken at Portrait Innovations. The girls did really well, and didn't really get cranky until the very end. Some highlights:

All 3 girls are sleeping through the night now, probably for over a month now, and all 3 cribs are in the nursery. The problem, though, is that they don't all choose to sleep through the night on the same night. Maybe 2 or 3 nights a week they'll all sleep. But usually someone is either up early or wakes up in the middle of the night. And yet still a million times better than it was.

We managed to make it out of the house in early June for a picnic for my department at work. It went well, though feeding 3 babies and trying to grab something to eat doesn't leave much room for socializing. I am very lucky for how well it has worked out being back full time, and am lucky for the flexibility I have in my job. Not to mention just thankful for a job in this economy...

Julie and I at the picnic:

We haven't been brave enough to take them all out anywhere else recently. We do have a rule, though, that if you are leaving the house, you have to take a baby with you (so that whoever is at home only has 2), so we have been trying to get them out to the grocery store, running errands, etc. Babies need input. :)

A self family portrait:

And of course we celebrated Greg's first Father's Day. We thought about doing a picnic, but it was blazing hot that weekend. Then we considered a brunch picnic, but it rained that morning! So Julie and I went out and got some bagels and the newspaper and we had a picnic in the living room. It did clear up later, though, so we got some daddy pictures for Father's Day.

We bought an exersaucer a few weeks ago, after getting a note that Emma was really enjoying the one at daycare. (We of course had a guard kitty when the box came.)

(She also guards diapers.)

All the girls have been trying it out.

Julie
Rebecca

Even on the lowest setting, they are all still a little bit too short for their feet to reach. We put some phone books on the bottom ... but then Julie discovered that the phone books were more fun than the exersaucer...

I think Julie still won...

Julie was the first to roll over, starting about 2 weeks ago. One night, she went back to belly, and the very next night she went belly to back. She hasn't been rolling a ton since then. Mostly she gets up on her side and gets about 3/4 over and then comes back. She woke up congested on a Friday about 3 weeks ago, and being new parents, Greg stayed home with her and took her to the doctor. She's fine - no fever, no ear infection, etc. But that was the start of my cold, and now all 3 girls are still sharing this congestion/coughing thing. Julie's our champion sleeper. I don't think she has waken up in the middle of the night since she started sleeping through.

Rebecca has been very talkative! One of her teachers at day care wrote a note a few weeks ago on her daily update sheet that said "I love talking to her!" She smiles a lot, too, and really likes to smile at her sisters when she sees them. We took Rebecca to the opthamologist last month, because her eyes had been lazy and crossing since birth. It has definitely gotten much better, but we wanted to make sure there wasn't anything to worry about, and of course there wasn't - she got a clean bill of health. She's still just growing and developing to overcome her prematurity. And we're beginning to realize that Becca is on her own timetable. She's perfectly normal, just very relaxed and easy going. We started to worry around 3 months when she wasn't smiling and trying to talk like Emma and Julie, but sure enough, she now talks and smiles as much, if not more, than her sisters. Rebecca rolled from her belly to her back on Father's Day, and wants desperately to go from back to belly. She gets up on her side all the time and yells and yells as she tries to get over. It'll be soon.

Emma has pretty much given up the pacifier for her thumb. And when she can, it's double thumbs. :) She had been seeming kind of grumpy for a while, like in those portraits we had taken, I don't think there's one where she is smiling. But in the last couple of weeks, she has been the happiest, smiliest baby ever. She gets these big cute goofy grins on her face that can't help but make you get a big goofy grin on yours. She didn't really seem all that interested in rolling over, but she went from her belly to her back last weekend, and just went from back to belly on Friday. She seemed more like she was going to crawl before she rolled, but when she saw her sisters, she must've changed her mind.

My brother Steven and his girlfriend Stephanie are with us for the weekend, so more pictures coming soon! It's so nice to see them, and of course to have the extra hands. We aren't doing much for the 4th, beyond cooking burgers and corn on the grill. And we've been eating watermelon all day. I made some fresh squeezed lemonade yesterday, and I think it has ruined me on lemonade forever. So good!

Happy 4th of July!

4 months and counting

Rebecca and Aunt Jen

From right before grandma and grandpa left 2 weeks ago:

My babies are 4 months old now! We took them to the pediatrician last week for their checkup (and shots). We were so excited that everyone is now off of the preemie charts and onto regular newborn growth charts. Emma's 14 lb 7 oz, and in the 75th percentile! Rebecca is 12 lb 4 oz, and Julie 12 lb 2 oz, and they are both around the 20th percentile. So, at 4 months, we've basically caught up to other 4 month olds. We're still a little behind developmentally, but catching up fast. The girls are developing good head control and will be rolling over and sitting up any day now.

Greg and I took the day off from work to take them to the pediatrician. By the time we got them to daycare, got to work, then turned around and went back to daycare to pick them up, take them to the dr ... It was just easier to take the day off. After we finished, we picked up some sandwiches and went to the park to eat, feed the girls, and go for a walk. A nice family afternoon.

Emma and I at the park.

My college roommates came for a visit over Memorial Day weekend to come see us and try to help me regain my sanity. We put a big dent in organizing the girls' clothes. They were starting to outgrow the newborn stuff (and, Emma's pretty much out of the 3 month stuff now, too) and I hadn't had a chance to sort through all of the stuff people have given us to try to find clothes that would fit. Poor Em kept ending up in clothes that are too small. So we're all organized again.

Courtney also baby sat for us last Saturday night so Greg and I got a date night to celebrate our anniversary (this past Friday). She was so brave! But it was really nice to get a night out.

Courtney took these while she was babysitting. They're just priceless! Julie's on the left, Becca's in the middle, and Emma is on the right.

Courtney and I with Rebecca, Julie, and Emma

Greg and I were home on Monday for Memorial Day, so after we dropped Courtney off at the airport, we decided to continue on another 30 minutes or so up the road to some outlets. (I say that like we all of a sudden just decided to go, when, in reality, it took quite a significant amount of planning.) The girls did great - actually, they slept most of the time. But feeding them was a bit of a challenge because we had pop up storms all day. But people were really getting on my nerves. I know we are quite a sight when we all go out, but the comments were just non-stop. People were like following us around in stores. We're not a freak show. When someone started touching Julie, I about lost it. Greg and I split up for the most part after that to try to not attract quite so much attention. It just amazes me how people think they have a right to invade our privacy. Part of me just wanted to yell "I'm here to spend time with my family, not answer strangers' questions!" I suppose we'll be battling this for a while.

Rebecca is still full of smiles. One of the things that puts the biggest smile on her face is this bright yellow warning label on the inside of her car seat. Whenever we put her in the car seat, she looks for it and gets this big grin on her face. She'll stare at it for quite a while. She also has discovered the bear toy hanging from her car seat, and that will bring smiles to her face. She also really seems to like these flowers that hang from the canopy of the pack-n-play; she can see them from the changing table part of the pack-n-play and they seem to calm her down. And everybody is obsessed with the mobiles these days - they just love them! Mobiles can make tears go away.

Baby Bex

Miss Julie is still our Chatty Cathy. She loves to stare at your face and talk and talk and talk. We finally bought a mirror that attaches to her crib, and she seems to like it. I can't tell if it isn't getting her all worked up sometimes, though. She is doing really well with her head control and trying to hold herself up. She has been sitting up in the Bumbo seat and does great with her head. Plus, she looks so cute in it.

Baby Jules

Julie in the Bumbo - - she does really well in it!

Miss Emma is currently obsessed with her fists. She's been trying to gnaw on them and get them in her mouth for a few weeks now, and has just recently figured out how to suck her thumb. And she's at it all the time now. She won't take a pacifier unless she's really tired and about to fall asleep. Other than that, though, she's pretty content right now unless her diaper is dirty. She loves attention, but she can also keep herself pretty entertained (with her thumb, of course). On Thursday morning, we noticed her repeatedly swinging at the Moose toy that hangs from her car seat - she kept hitting its feet over and over. It's the first time we've seen her swing at a toy what seemed to be intentionally.

Just a few notes from around here

Whew, another weekend, and I'm just exhausted.

Greg's parents, who had been with us for the last month, left on Saturday, so we are officially on our own now for the first time since before the girls were born. It's been about 36 hours, and everyone is still alive. I won't claim that Greg and I both got showers this weekend, but the girls got their baths.

We were bold and ventured out to Panera for dinner last night. We knew it would be empty and thought it would be a safe choice. We loaded up the girls right after they ate, and took the double stroller and carried one of the car seats. The girls did great - better than I had expected. Emma was awake and happy the whole time. Rebecca spent a lot of the time talking to the bear hanging from her car seat handle, and then fell asleep. Julie was asleep when we got there, and looked a little concerned when she woke up, but no screams. The only time they got cranky was in the car on the way home. A success.

Rebecca has been full of smiles for us lately. So darn sweet. She's been holding out on us.

Julie spent a lot of time staring at Rebecca this afternoon and trying to talk to her.

We split the girls up this weekend to try to continue to make progress on sleeping through the night. Emma was sleeping in our room for the last week, and was pretty much sleeping through the night. She'd wake up around 4 or 5. We moved her back to the nursery this weekend, and she's been sleeping easily until 6. We hear some noises throughout the night, but no screaming for food. I spent the weekend with Julie in the pack-n-play in our bedroom, and she slept until 5:30-6:00 both nights without waking me up in the middle of the night. Greg had it a bit rougher with Rebecca, downstairs in the pack-n-play. She has been up both nights screaming in the middle of the night around 3 or 4 (the feeding used to be @ 3). So, Emma and Julie are both pretty much officially sleeping through the night (now that I typed that I'm afraid I'm going to jinx it), but Rebecca's not quite there yet.

My First Mother's Day

My first Mother's Day was great. It was a beautiful day, and we decided to go one town south for a picnic lunch. It could have gone horribly wrong - but the girls did great. We got there, ate lunch, and then let the girls stretch out on the ground for a while.

Good things come in threes...

... as we know. :)

But I'm hoping the broken things stop at 4.

In the last 2 weeks we've broken:
  • the handle on the lawn mower, which had already been fixed once.  We now own a new lawn mower.  The old one was an old Honda that came with the house - the engine definitely outlasted the body!  Greg likes to say that we didn't get a free lawn mower with the house, we got a 30 year payment plan on the lawn mower.  It's lasted for over 5 years, so I guess we shouldn't complain.
  • the track lighting in the kitchen.  I believe the transformer had to be replaced, but considering my complete lack of knowledge on electricity, I could be making that up.
  • the vacuum cleaner.  Think it needs a new belt.  (That's what Greg says.  I'm not mechanical, either.)
So, to top it off, on the way to work, a huge rock hit the windshield of the wagon... you know, the only car that we all fit in?

Oh, this has got to stop.

I was thinking about taking bets on what will go next, but I don't want to jinx it.  We rely awfully heavily on the fridge, dishwasher, and washing machine these days.

Where we're at these days

Long time, no post! I guess it's pretty obvious to say that we have been busy.

My mom was here since the week before I delivered up through the middle of April, helping us take care of the girls around the clock. Greg's parents are with us now, and are keeping the girls during the day (and night!) since I started back at work about 3 weeks ago now. Knowing that the girls were at home with family definitely eased the transition back to work; we start daycare on Monday and I'm still a bit nervous. Overall, though, going back to work has been good for me. I really really needed to get out of the house, as I think I was about to go crazy there for a while. Plus, I shower regularly now.

A group shot just before my parents left. Greg has Rebecca, I have Julie, and my mom has Emma. Can you see Julie's hair sticking up?

This is a group shot. Poor Rebecca in the middle! (Julie on the left, Emma on the right)

The girls are doing really well! Emma is unofficially up to 15 lbs as of Friday night, which explains why those diapers have seemed a bit snug lately. She also slept through the night for the first time on Friday night, with a repeat performance last night! She ate at 9, went to sleep by 10, woke up at 4:30 whimpering and then went back to sleep. We had to wake her up to eat at 6 both mornings! Hopefully the other 2 aren't far behind. We have put her in the pack-n-play in our bedroom at night so Julie and Rebecca don't wake her up. I think we'll end up separating them like that until they are all sleeping through the night consistently.

Emma loves to be awake and looking around. She does not like being bored. She studies things. And Emma loves to eat! We knew she was ready to sleep through the night when she wasn't finishing those middle-of-the-night bottles. She holds her head up pretty well these days, and also likes to stand up if you hold her. She's thinking about rolling over- turning her head, and nearly getting on her side. Her favorite things right now (besides eating) are grabbing my hair (which I finally got cut), sitting in the bouncy seat, and going for walks around the house.

Some pictures of Emma:

Julie is up to about 11.5 lbs now. And she loves to talk! She loves to stare at faces, and then she'll start cooing and babbling. Her grandparents said she caught sight of herself in the mirror over the baby papasan chair the other day and started talking to herself. :) Julie only has 2 volumes though - her cute babbling and her ear-piercing screams. And she can alternately seamlessly between the two. I guess she gets mad when she doesn't have anyone to talk to. Luckily the screams don't last for very long. Julie also loves to smile, and tends to do it while she is talking to you.

Some pictures of Julie:

Rebecca is also at about 11.5 lbs these days. She definitely has the most hair of any of her sisters! Rebecca is usually a pretty mellow baby, but she tends to get really cranky around 7:30 each night. Greg found one way to soothe her, though - - take her outside and walk around the front yard. Of course, she gets even crankier when you have to come back in (the bugs were biting!). Besides being outside, Rebecca loves to look at her sisters and play with her own hands.

Some pictures of Rebecca:

And just a few more pictures:

I lost the cats.

On Tuesday, I lost the cats.

Sometime after midnight Monday night, Lefty was sitting on the rug in the bathroom upstairs, and Dusty was sitting just outside in the hall. That was the last time we saw them.

Around 2:30 am, Greg went out into the garage to get batteries.

Around 10:00 am, the guy came for our annual termite inspection and needed me to open the garage door.

Around 11:00 am, I noticed that the cats' water bowl was nearly dry and refilled it.

Around 1:00 pm, Mom said, "I haven't seen Dusty or Lefty in a while."

We tore the house apart looking for them. Multiple times. We looked in closets, under beds, behind furniture. I looked inside of boxes of diapers under the crib.

We looked everywhere. Ev. ery. where.

And that's when I just knew that they were gone. I called Greg at work, sobbing. He came home, and he and my mom canvassed the neighborhood, leaving notes with neighbors and knocking on doors, while I was at home, pacing. And crying.

I could not figure out how they could have gotten out. It didn't make sense. Lefty had been more and more curious about the garage lately, but the door would have to have been open for a good little while for Dusty to decide to follow her.

No sign of the cats. I put out some cat food on the front porch and cried some more.

It got really cold here on Monday night, around freezing, and was really windy and blustery on Tuesday. Projected to get even colder on Tuesday night. Horrible, horrible pictures in my head. These cats have NEVER been outside. They do still have their claws.

Greg rounded up some cardboard boxes to put outside for the cats. Neither of us could admit to each other that things did not look good.

As he was coming in from the garage, he saw Dusty.

In the dining room.

And then Lefty came down the stairs.

And I cried some more.

With all that has been going on here lately, these poor cats have certainly been getting less attention. And probably taken for granted. But they have been so good with the girls. A little curious, sniffing around here and there. But generally taking it really well. Dusty spends lots of time in the nursery with us, mostly because she likes to be around people. She seems a bit more curious about the babies than Lefty is, which is an interesting personality change for her. Lefty is usually the more social. Dusty has been really skittish (sp?) lately, though. It must just be all of the changes, but she is constantly walking around tapping at things (baby clothes, baby toys) to see if they move or are going to attack. The other day she swatted at some plastic keys and must have caught them with her paw, because she flung them half way across the room.

We still have no idea where they are hiding. It had to have been big enough for the two of them, and somewhere where they wouldn't have heard the treat can shaking.

The New Normal

I just can't believe that Emma, Julie, and Rebecca are more than two and a half months old now. Every day, I tell myself "They're never going to be this small again." Just crazy!

Rebecca spent 6 days in the hospital for pneumonia. They ran all sorts of tests, but never found anything conclusive, and she probably had some sort of cold/virus. It took a while for her to come off of supplemental oxygen, but she is doing much better now. By the time she was admitted to the hospital, she was already eating much better, and now eats the same amount as her sisters... sort of. We're having some feeding problems with her at the moment, where she just wants to sleep as soon as you put a bottle in her mouth, and won't eat very much at a time. And then spits up. A lot.

At our last doctor's appointment, the doctor was concerned that Julie's weight gain was too slow. We rebalanced her feeding (in terms of the % formula versus breast milk), and took her back a week later - - she had gained almost a pound! She seems to be gaining much faster now, and we've all noticed that her face is filling out a bit. She is probably still the smallest, but not by much!

Emma is just growing and growing. We got an unofficial weight from the bathroom scale last week of 10 pounds! I think that would be considered good for any full term newborn 2.5 weeks after delivery (which is where we are right now). She is really wanting to be awake more, and see things. She can also be rather demanding. Everyone says she is just like her mother. Hmm.

Julie was our screamer, but Rebecca and Emma have certainly found their voices. And all of their cries are pretty distinctive. So yes, when they cry, 95% of the time I can tell who it is.

We are still on the 3 hour feeding schedule, and it is just grueling. On a good day, I get a nap from 10-11pm, and then go to bed around 4:30 or 5:00 am until 8:30 am. Oh, and I haven't been out of the house in 2 weeks. Haven't changed out of pajamas in 2 weeks. And consider myself very lucky when I get a shower - - I'm embarrassed to admit how long I go sometimes.

I think I read somewhere that the difference between sanity and insanity is sleep.

But now, some pictures. Stay tuned for a weight update later this week!
