Birthday Cake!

We finally got around(!) to birthday cake for the girls on Wednesday night. Between everyone being sick, then cranky after their check up, nobody has felt much like cake. After the cupcakes last week, I should have known that the girls wouldn't be too interested in cake.

Before:

"When are mom and dad going to stop singing?"

Becca totally went for it, and is the only one who really destroyed the cake. But as she was ripping it apart, she start crying. We couldn't really figure out why ... if it felt funny, if she couldn't get it off her hands, if it was cold. She didn't stop crying until we gave her Teddy Grahams. The girls all love those right now, and totally prefer them to cake.

"I Survived Birthday Week '10"

We are printing t-shirts for those that did actually survive it.

Let's see... where to start... Greg's parents and my mom were with us for the week, which was just wonderful. It's so nice to have extra hands. And the girls love all of the extra attention. We all went out to McAllister's for dinner last Sunday, and it was the first time that we've gone out and the girls have only eaten table food - - no jars. They had some potato, chicken, and mac-n-cheese. We've started using disposable place mats when we go out, but Emma still tends to chew through those when we're not looking. She's teething like mad, and tends to be covered in drool these days.

Love this picture of Emma napping with Grandma.

Trying to get a picture with the grandparents.

On the girls' birthday (Wednesday), we took some cupcakes (courtesy of the grandmas) in to daycare. Emma, Julie, and Becca weren't too sure what to do with them, but all of the other kids ate them. Honestly, the girls were more interested in eating the paper plates.

Getting ready for daycare on their birthday. It's the only day they've gone to daycare in matching outfits!

Tuckered out after daycare

That night, we all went out to Moe's for a birthday dinner. The girls ate chicken and black beans. LOTS of chicken and black beans.

Everybody but Greg, who's taking the picture.

Probably too much chicken and black beans, since Julie and Emma threw them back up in their sleep that night.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Because by Friday, EVERYONE in our house, except for me, was sick with a stomach bug. And it was a nasty one. Greg said he lost 16 lbs over the weekend. (At least 6 of that has come back simply by getting over dehydration.) But oh, what a weekend. The girls bounced back more quickly than everyone else. We are still dealing with some lingering symptoms, but they are back at daycare and on probiotics. Our plans for the zoo and cake on Saturday were put on hold (in part due to the weather) for the time being. Maybe cake tomorrow.

We did open some presents on Saturday. The girls are starting to get it... They still want to eat the paper, but Emma has realized that she gets attention for ripping the paper off and then holding it up and giving it to us. (E is in red, J in blue, and B in the stripes.)

Emma likes the box as much as the gifts.

The girls went for their 1 year check up today and are doing great. Emma is just over 24 lb, Julie is just over 21, and Becca is a little more than 21.5 lb. After she weighed them all, the nurse weighed Emma and Julie again, because she couldn't believe there was a 3 lb difference between them. Yup. They have totally different builds. Becca is now officially the tallest, which we were beginning to suspect. And their head circumferences are off the charts. So far off the charts that the doctor remeasured them when she came in (after the nurse measured them). Her measurements put them back on the charts, but suffice it to say, our girls have large heads. :)

We've been having some questions about how well Becca is hearing, and I talked to both the pediatrician and the early interventionist about it this week. The early interventionist said she was wondering the same thing, so we're going to take her to an ENT to have her hearing tested.

But no ear infections today, which was good. Emma had that resistant infection, and we finished the antibiotic last week. We had her ears rechecked last Friday, and the doctor said that her ears weren't perfect and there was still fluid in them, but couldn't really call it an infection. When she checked them again today, she said about the same thing... so at least they haven't gotten worse since last week. Since she doesn't have a fever or anything, we're going to wait and see.

The girls had to have 3 shots plus a finger prick today. They gave them lollipops to try to distract them. Julie still pitched a fit over the finger prick, but it seemed to work for Emma and Becca's finger pricks. They all still screamed about the shots. But Emma went to town on that lollipop. She had to hold it herself, and by the time we finished all the shots and were getting them dressed again, she had almost finished the thing! She got really mad when I took it away to put her jacket on.
