Personality and Developmental Notes 3/30/11

"Marvin K Mooney" ("Mah knee") is still one of the girls' favorite books, but there are "in" to different parts of it now. Julie likes the words "please," "jet," and "get." Both Emma and Julie do the "zumble zay" and "crunk car." Julie also likes to point out "Mah knee" on every page.

"Go Dog Go" is near the top of the list right now. The like the "Good byes" at the moment, and the colors. They still like the alphabet book, too, and like to say "jack in the box."

The top of the list right now, though? That would a Curious George book ("George" or just "monkey book") about a snowy day. They just love it, and we read it almost every night.

Emma is obsessed with clothes with circles ("suh kuls") on them.

Still not a lot of progress on the potty front. We're still waiting it out. Occasionally Emma and Julie will ask about it, usually right before bed. Becca's still scared, I think.

Julie got a new toothbrush this week and she was almost speechless. Then, out of the blue, she said "That's pretty!"

When Emma wants to do something herself, she'll say "My do it."

Julie found a pinecone in the front yard and called it a "fow-wuh." No sense in convincing her otherwise.

Daycare now requires that we bring pull ups in for the girls. We've still got a stockpile of diapers at home, and since they're cheaper, we're going to use those up before the girls wear pull ups at home. But we have to put pull ups on them in the morning on weekdays. At first, it was a battle, because they "don wan puh-yups." But on the weekends, now, unless I can distract her, Emma says, "No wan dye-puh. Wan puh-yup."

When we're in the car now, the girls have very strong feelings about which way we go. "Dat way" or "udd-ah way" get shouted at us all the time. They are most concerned about it when we leave daycare in the afternoon. We turn right out of daycare to go home, but turning left out of daycare takes us to all the "fun" stuff - we pass the school bus parking lot, the pizza place, Moe's, the Little Gym. When we go past the bus parking lot, they've also started saying "busses," using the plural which I thought was interesting.

Julie has picked up "lee me lone." Emma and Becca were going crazy with the tent over the weekend, turning it upside down and walking it around. Julie wanted no part of it - - she was playing with baby dolls. Whenever they bumped into her, she's say "lee me lone."

Who would have thought that chicken noodle soup and corn muffins could be so messy?

Meals have certainly been messy lately with the girls sitting at the table. But I think corn muffins were even worse than rice.

Emma's shirt was tiered ruffles ... perfect for catching crumbs.

Beautiful

Aren't they?

"Rain go away"

We've had a lot of rain over the last few weeks, and I love the rain. On Saturday, though, the girls started singing "Rain go away." We'd been thinking of going to the zoo on Saturday, but "chance of showers" turned in to all day rain.

Emma and Becca have been really whiny and clingy lately. Daycare actually called me last Wednesday at work and said that Emma had been crying all morning long. Not what a working mom needs to hear. They all had a hard time going to sleep on Tuesday night after being all worked up at the gym, so after she crashed hard at nap time, we chalked it up to being tired. But on Thursday morning, she sat in the back of the van and cried "mommy mommy mommy" all the way to daycare. Sigh. She's doing a little better, but there are still times where she insists on mommy - mommy holding her hand, mommy strapping her into her car seat, etc. Becca has just been really sensitive (which is just Becca), but has been coming over to me a lot more often with her arms up wanting to be held. Lots of times she wants to be held after she's finished eating but I'm not. Or she wants to be reassured when someone else has gotten in trouble. I wonder if they're going through a growth spurt and getting really tired and cranky? Julie is pretty much oblivious, the same crazy little June Bug. She's got a bit of a cough right now, though, so she's not quite herself.

We've also had a harder time lately trying to get the girls some individual attention. More often lately we're trying to do things as a family, even just running errands. I feel so torn, pretty much all the time, between wanting to spend time with one of them vs. wanting to spend time as a family vs. getting some alone time.

Whenever we ask the girls what they want for dinner lately, Julie says "buh buh cute," (Emma screams "CHICKEN NUGGETS!"), so on Friday we finally went out for barbecue for dinner. And they mostly ate the mac and cheese.

On Saturday, I took Becca out to run some errands and then out for lunch. Naps when we got home were a bust. We were determined to get a decent night's sleep, so like way too many other people on a rainy afternoon, we went to bounce. The girls had a blast, but there were a ton of people there. And way too many people just letting their kids run wild. Seriously.

They really liked playing on the one that's got kind of a big rectangular "track" with a big blob mountain in the middle. Emma and Julie finally made it up to the top of the blob this time. Such big girls! That's Emma in the blue stripes, Becca in the light purple shirt, and julie in the pink and gray stripes.

I think the girls all slept through the night, but they were up bright and early this morning.

Workin' Out

With our recent attraction to tumbling over our chairs (and even more recently over the arms of the couch), I signed us up for a trial class at The Little Gym. We went after dinner the other night. As usual, at first the girls were clingy, but they got over it pretty quickly. Very quickly, in fact.

Becca was the first to volunteer for a forward roll over a "log," and she did great. Once Emma saw that Becca got a round of applause, she suddenly wanted to try it. They loved the free play time, playing with a parachute, playing with balls, trying new things.

The question is whether we can fit it in our budget...

Emma's moment

What monster did this to Emma's back?

From the Accident Report:
Location where the incident occurred: playground

How did the injury occur? "Emma was having a 'moment' and she scratched her back on the ground."

Apparently "having a moment" is a euphemism for "throwing a fit." Seriously, before I saw the scratch, they told me she got put in timeout while they were outside and wasn't very happy about it so she "had a moment." I had no idea what she meant, but somehow I assumed it had to do with poop.

Apparently not.

Hi

The past few weeks haven't been eventful in the "having stuff to post about" department. That will certainly change in the next few weeks as our schedule is filling up. But for now, it's nice to have no obligations on the weekends, no plans.

The weather was gorgeous on Thursday, and as we were leaving work, we decided to pick up the girls and take them to the park. It was nice to break up our routine a bit, even if we ended up keeping the girls up a bit late, with dinner at Chick-fil-A, and then baths. Oh, except for Emma doing a face plant on the pavement and scratching up the side of her face. I don't have any pictures of it, but it honestly looked worse the next day. It almost looks like she has a black eye, too.

We did yard work on Saturday with the girls. I think we got done about 20% of what we would have liked to get done, but I guess that's what having kids means.

We messed with the girls' schedule a bit on Sunday, trying to get errands done and get lunch. Which pretty much resulted in a disaster when we tried to put them down for naps.

And what, exactly, do I mean by "disaster?"

Well, I was happily watching Hulu and playing with scrap supplies when Greg informs me that Emma has removed her own dirty diaper in her crib. Balled up the diaper the same way we do. Yeah.

I guess that will teach me to mess with the schedule.

I haven't really taken pictures lately, except these random ones from last week.

"There's GOT to be some way to make this even more dangerous..."

CC March Blog Hop

This month's challenge was stitching. I've been doing more and more stitching on my projects lately, usually using my sewing machine. But I also just bought the WRMK Stitch Easy. When I started this project, my original intent was to use that... but then things kind of went their own way.

I pulled out an old CC kit that I've been playing with - - it's the Charmed kit from last March. The red accent color actually came in the kit, though I almost missed it. I missed the red and white eye chart paper to add another shade of blue to it.

The scallop along the top is made from punched circles. What's funny is that a lot of the stuff is last year's LYB release, but those stick pins are from Twig, this year's release. The red corrugated alphas were from the shop. There's some baker's twine and BG (green) chipboard alphas from the stash.

I recently fell in love with the Epiphany crafts button maker tools - I bought the 14mm heart shape, and made the heart that's above the picture (it's a little hard to tell it's a heart because I punched it out of flower paper).

Oh, and the stitching? It's through the word "lucky."

Personality and Developmental Notes 3/17/11

Becca's anemia is now gone. She had some troubles with iron levels at her one year appointment, but we're back in the clear now.

Julie's got a tooth that has been discolored since she was a baby. It's one of her canine teeth, and I swear she chipped it right after it came in. Nothing to do right now, since it isn't getting worse, but we'll be headed for the dentist sometime this year.

Julie still likes to repeat things Greg and I say and act like she's in charge. The funniest one right now is when she says "Alright ladies!"

Julie's got one ear tube that has fallen out and her other one is on the way out. I hope we manage to stay infection free.

The girls are starting to get used to the idea of taking turns, particularly with THE SEAT in the van, meaning that there isn't as much yelling or crying when it isn't their "tuhn.". Julie at least seems to be developing a sense of fairness, and is our little enforcer. Becca had a basket sometime that Emma was trying to steal. We tried telling Emma to give it back (I try to stay out of it physically, when I can), but she wasn't budging. At this point, both Emma and Becca had a hand on the basket. Julie comes over yelling "Beh-uh hat it" and trying to pull it away from Emma. She got very upset when Emma didn't give it back.

Emma has started spinning in circles to make herself dizzy.

The words that are coming out of their mouths continue to floor me. They know the word "rainbow" and we've got a crystal hanging in the window that makes rainbows on the walls, ceiling, floor. This past weekend, the kept trying to stomp on the rainbow. The cutest was when Julie got down on her belly to play with the rainbow.

We've got a shirt with a panda bear on it that the girls haven't worn very often. I have no idea where Julie learned the word "panda," but sure enough, when I put it on her, she immediately identified it. She also pointed out a panda in one of the ABC books.

When Becca is begging for a bite of something I'm eating, she sticks her tongue out and wags it back and forth.

A sit & spin came home from the consignment sale with me, after we had to pull the girls off one at Monkey Joe's. We also have a new booster seat that we're trying out before we buy 2 more. The booster seat is more of a toy than a seat at the moment. Anyhow, we added an extra element of danger to the sit & spin by putting the booster seat on top of the center post of the sit & spin and trying to climb on top of it. Unsuccessfully at this point.

The girls love raisins. They don't get that from me. They make little snack boxes of raisins now (even a store brand), and the girls love the little boxes. But with 3, it wasn't very economical, so now I'm buying raisins at Costco.

We went to Panera for dinner last Friday, and when Greg put the juice boxes on the table, we got a chorus of "oooooooohhhhh.". Even the people at the table behind us started laughing.

Becca is my berry eater. She caught me rinsing raspberries earlier this week, and begged for one. She also loves blueberries. Julie gave her raspberry to Greg. Emma chewed hers up, asked for more, and then spit it out on the floor.

Julie in particular likes to say "I need more" when she wants more. But if I'm giving them each something and Julie hasn't gotten hers, she say, "I need me."

The "pleases" and "thank yous" melt my heart, but they don't always know which one to use when. Julie tends to say "tank oooh Emma" even when she's giving something to Emma. And Rebecca likes to say "sorry" to whoever should be saying sorry to her.

The girls were stirring spoons in their spice jars earlier this week. I asked Emma what she was making and she told me "sammich." (sandwich)

Another favorite word right now is "everybody.". I've started trying to give them the same color bowls and cups all the time to avoid fights and "tade"s (trade). Julie likes to call out "eh body geen!" or whatever color they've got.

Speaking of colors, Emma's had them down for a couple of weeks, but just this week it seems to have clicked for both Julie and Rebecca. Their old standby when I ask what color something is is still "geen!"

They also understand the concept of "hot" and have learned to blow on things that are hot. But now they like to use the excuse that something is hot to blow on whatever they want to blow on. Like, say dry cereal.

Ten on Tuesday

1. I wish I had dreams about normal person things, and not about new Costco coupons coming in the mail.

2. Add this to your list of things not to do: push front passenger seat to fully reclined position. Hand out mini boxes of raisins to the tough customers in the back row. While still facing backwards, and with sunglasses on, grab the release lever on the seat. Get a completely unexpected slap in the face by the head rest. Repeat after me: "that's going to leave a mark."

3. I made Aloha Chicken from the Deceptively Delicious cookbook last week, and it was really good, even if you're not trying to be deceptive.

4. Last night, we had Quesadillas from the Doubly Delicious cookbook. Everyone liked them. Emma started out saying "don like it, don want it." But she kept picking at it and eventually asked for more. Julie, as usual, ate as much as Becca and Emma combined. They were a little messy, but a really good flavor.

5. I can get Emma to try just about anything if I call it "chicken."

6. I'd never seen a cat give such a dirty look as Dusty did yesterday morning. Lefty has gotten even more demanding for her "lake" in the bathroom sink whenever we're in there. And she's very possessive of it, too. If Dusty tries to put a paw in while Lefty's sitting there, she'll swat at her. She did that yesterday morning, and I swear, Dusty was glaring at her. It's the dirtiest cat look I've ever seen. (I can hear my parents saying that I taught her that look.)

7. I'm sick. Not sick sick, just whiny sick. Cough, sneeze, headachy. Not enough to stay home from work, just enough to make me feel like lying down on the couch as soon as I get home.

8. I'm so torn this time of year. The air is cool and dry, making me want to open the windows. But the pollen is already starting, and I'm so congested that my teeth hurt.

9. After the doctor told us to consider vitamins at some point if the girls aren't eating their vegetables, I've been trying to get more in. (Hence, the Deceptively Delicious and Doubly Delicious cookbooks.) But we went vegetable-cold-turkey this weekend and had raw vegetables as a snack. I bought a veggie tray at Costco, with the intent of pulling out when they start whining before dinner is ready. In just the last few days, they've all eaten "trees" (broccoli), and Becca has tried the pea pods and a carrot. What a huge feeling of accomplishment. We're serving them with hummus. Which we had to buy more of, after the girls "helped" put groceries away when we got home from Costco, and we found the tub of hummus in the pantry a day later.

10. Our cats still chase the shadows of their tails. And I still think it's hysterical.

Monday, March 14, 2011

I sure have a lot to say about not much.

Not much to report from our weekend. I don't think I even took any pictures.

I took all 3 girls to Costco on Saturday morning so Greg could sleep in. They did really well, even when I had to boot Julie out of the back of the cart because it was getting too full ... and I didn't want her to sit on the fruit. But she walked through the store really well. I always stop at the kids' clothes' tables at Costco, and Julie was still in the back of the cart at that point. We put a few dresses in the cart and next thing I know, she's trying to get them over her head.

The girls took a LONG time to fall asleep at nap time on Saturday. I think that chattered for a good hour and a half before they fell asleep. We finally had to wake them up from their naps at 4, because we were planning to go shoe shopping. Stride Rite has these great summer shoes that the girls wore just about every day last year. They have mesh panels and two velcro strips, but their toes are protected. I wanted to get them measured, too, although my home measurements were pretty close. Becca actually has the biggest feet, and is about a 7.5. Emma's a 7, and Julie's a 6. So yeah, now we have three identical pairs of shoes in 3 different sizes.

We actually got a baby sitter on Saturday night so Greg and I could go out to dinner for my birthday. We had a nice night out, but it makes me feel old - - we tried to stay out until 10:00, but I was falling asleep.

We had another rough Sunday. It just seems to be a bad day for us. It didn't help that neither Greg nor I are feeling great. My throat started getting scratchy on Friday night, and by Sunday morning I was coughing and sneezing and had a nice headache. I felt a little better after a nap on the couch on Sunday morning.

Greg took the girls outside to play on Sunday afternoon. We'd been planning to take them out with us to do some yard work, but neither of us felt up to it. We actually made a trip to Target with them on Friday night to get toddler gardening "mittneys." Pink, of course.

I lied. Greg did take a picture of the girls when they were outside. We've been watching all of the flowers bloom lately, and they ask to go see the flowers when we get home every day.

Oh, and yes, Emma's shirt (the pink and white one) is on backwards. She put it on herself and I didn't have the heart to fix it.

Personality and Developmental Notes 3/13/11

I think Emma is practicing her feats of strength for Festivus. When she gets in the car, she like to stand in her carseat (facing forward), put her hand on either side of the top of the seat, lock her arms, and then lift and swing her feet.

When we went bouncing last weekend, Becca had a bow clipped in her hair. Every time she got up, she'd sweep her hand over her forehead and make sure her bow was still there.

The daffodils and crocuses are blooming now, and we've been looking at the flowers every afternoon when we get home. At some point, Emma found a crocus and started picking the little purple balls off, and had them in her mouth before I knew it.

We were in the car last weekend, and went past Taco Bell. Emma pointed to the sign and said "hat." Yup, the bell in the logo kind of looks like a hat. So now we call it Taco Hat.

The girls are all loving to learn new words, so a lot of time they will just try to repeat what we say. We were going down the milk aisle at the grocery store when Julie pointed at some gallons of bottled water and said, "milk." I said, "That's water, baby." And Julie said "water baby."

They all love spotting busses and trucks on the way to day care in the morning. But now, they have started requesting "more truck," complete with sign language for "more," like we could produce them on demand. Emma has started calling them "cool (school) bus."

Becca will sometimes (only sometimes) call Emma "Eeeeeeeeemma." It's usually in the context of "Eeeeeeeemma, Eeeeeeeeema."

At Becca's checkup last week, they put her back on nebulizer treatments 3 times a day. I wasn't here the first time she had to do it, but Greg said there was a fight over who got to hold the nebulizer. Emma and Julie wanted to help, and Becca wanted it herself. As the week wore on, though, the fight moved to who got to turn the machine on. And Becca became less and less interested in actually taking the medicine. The last day or two was really rough.

Trees are budding, and Emma likes to point out the "pink trees" on the way in to day care in the morning.

Becca has started adding "ummmm" to the beginning of her sentences, particularly if she is making a decision. It's so cute.

I noticed when the girls were coloring recently that they (sometimes) do remarkably well holding their crayons with "correct" hand positions, not just balled up in their fists.

Julie is no vegetarian. She constantly asks for "more meat" at dinner.

Our sleeping situation got better for a little while, but has been pretty rocky again. We finally broke down and turned off the baby monitor. It started as an accident. But when we got a full night of sleep, we decided to try it. It worked for a while - the girls either weren't waking up, were soothing them back to sleep, or would wake up at 5 or 6, but not at midnight, 2am, etc. I think we got close to a 50% sleep through the night rate ... for about a week. I tell you, I felt like a different person. But now we're back to 1 or 2 kids in bed most nights, for most of the night.

Julie calls just about anything a "paper towel" - napkins, washcloths, tissues, wipes.

What month is it?

I guess I never got around to an update from last week, which is a pretty good indication of what life has been like lately. I spent a decent chunk of my "spare" time last week prepping stuff for our moms of multiples consignment sale. I took a half day off from work on Friday to drop off all of our stuff, and then work my set up shift. I actually roped Greg into going up there with me to drop stuff off, because we had 2 full car loads of stuff. It seems like a lot of stuff sold this time, because it only took one car to pick up the stuff that didn't sell. I didn't do a ton of shopping, because I managed to do a good job at end-of-season clearance shopping last year, so we're pretty well stocked. I got some "contingency" clothes in 3T, just in case. I also bought a set of decent dresses, just in case.

Last weekend was just rainy all weekend long. I wanted a fun family activity to do for my birthday, but I couldn't come up with anything that didn't involve going outside. So, on Saturday morning, we went to Monkey Joe's (inflatables) and let the girls wear themselves out. I bought some discount passes on livingsocial recently, so we used those. I'm not sure if it was the rain or if it's normally that busy, but I think we liked the place we went last time better. We got there early, and honestly the girls were starting to get bored once it was getting really busy. But they definitely had fun and wore themselves out. That 3 hour nap last time wasn't a fluke! Our only traumatic moment was when the girls were playing in this one that had a piece with two hills and a valley in between them. Becca got stuck in the valley and couldn't get out. I could see the look of panic on her face. Then, an older boy started bouncing and yelling on the hill next to her and she just started screaming and crying. I made Greg go in for her.

Some pics...

This is the valley, shortly before Becca got stuck. That's Emma in there. She figured out that she could climb over the side to get out. Becca freaked out before she figured it out.

I've just been dragging this week. I've fallen asleep a couple of times this week on the couch. So glad the weekend is finally here.

Q R S T U V

I was on my way to Emma's check up on Friday morning (with a car full of stuff for the consignment sale; note the exersaucer in the passenger seat) when she started singing her ABCs. She won't do it on command, and I didn't want to interrupt her, so I pulled out my phone and started recording. I eventually had to set the phone down, so the screen goes black, but she's still singing.

Personality and Developmental Notes 3/4/11

Earlier this week, I had on a shirt that was kind of a wrap shirt- two pieces of fabric that cross in the front to form a v neck. Emma told me, "Mommy shirt broken."

In the car on the way to/from the aquarium, we heard Emma sing "A B C D E F G H I J K (pause) O P Q R S.". Now, it's not all clearly distinct, but she's got the tune and rhythm down. They've been asking for the "ABC" book before bed, and after we go through that, we sing our ABCs.

They just love that ABC book. It's got one picture per letter, so they are learning new words: Julie has picked up on "telephone," "nest," and "yo-yo.". Emma calls the xylophone a "telephone."

She confuses "dolphin" and "penguin" right now, too.

While I was driving, Greg also caught Emma singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" to herself. We didn't understand the words, but he caught on to her hand gestures.

The girls have been doing really well with the big girl cups, though I'm tired of cleaning up spilled milk on the floor. It usually spills when they aren't paying attention to what they are doing and they knock the cup off the table. Lately, they've been requesting water.

The girls have completely burned through their sneakers this season. (Although Emma still calls her sneakers "shoes" and her dress shoes "nee kas.") we stopped quickly at the outlet mall on our way home from the aquarium, and I ran in to the Gap outlet (finally found that gift card!) and picked up some basic pink sneakers. I had been planning to get them better sneakers, but they about lived in sandals last summer, so we really just needed something to get us through the next month or two, because I'm sure they'll outgrow them by the time sneaker season rolls around again.

Greg finally got over his fear of taking all 3 girls to the grocery store by himself. He even did it without the aid of the giant race car shopping carts. (Yes, that's right parents with 1 kid in one of those carts, he was glaring at you every time your paths crossed. And now I feel guilty for taking one when I just take one of the girls to the store.). I have to admit, it was nice to have some time to myself.

Becca has started pretending to be a cat. She crawls around under the table and says "meow". Julie will also pretend to be a cat, or sometimes a frog (she says "ribbip").

We were in the kitchen putting the girls' shoes on Wednesday morning. I wasn't going to put Julie's on yet, because we had about 20 minutes until we had to go to her check up. Of course, not having her shoes when Becca and Emma did upset her. So Becca went to get Julie's shoes, and Emma stayed in the kitchen and assured her "Becca find it."

Becca has been pushing a lot of boundaries lately, testing us and disobeying and then grinning at us. But she's also extremely (sometimes overly) generous. If she has something that Emma or Julie wants, 75% of the time, she'll give it to them, even if she got it fairly.

The girls are starting to be insistent about dressing themselves. They are very good about getting their pants and socks off. They can also pull up their pants, if they are knit. Emma can put some socks on. They can also pull shirts over their heads, but can't get their arms in yet.

Becca is starting to have clothing preferences, too. If you put a shirt on her that she doesn't like, she stands their with a sad look on her face and lifts up her shirt. "Don wannit.". Or, she'll pull mismatched pieces from the 3 outfits we bring down. On Wednesday, she wanted the polka dot pants but not the shirt that went with it. It took a lot of convincing ("see the pretty flowers?". "look, the shirt has pockets!") before she would put it on.

We got the girls these little red foam chairs last year sometime. For a while we used them for our before-bed sippy cups, but lately the girls have figured out that they make great tumbling equipment. I am currently investigating enrolling my little gymnasts at The Little Gym.

When I took Julie for her check up, she got 3 shots (and a finger stick!). She had band aids everywhere! When we left the dr, they also gave her a princess sticker that I put on her shirt. When I picked the girls up that afternoon, they said Julie was showing off her "sticker" all day, but not the sticker on her shirt (which was long gone), but the "sticker" (band aid) on her finger. After we ate dinner and were getting pajamas on, Emma found the band aids from Julie's legs that had stuck to the inside of her pants, and I swear, they played with those "stickers" until they went to bed.

Daycare drop offs are going pretty well these days. Their new teachers in the 2 year old room just do really great with them. Drop offs are quick, and we don't get tears anymore. Some whines and hanging on our legs, but the teachers bring them right over to the window so we can wave to them. I think just having that routine has helped.

The girls like to take books to bed with them. It's often a big debate after story time about who gets which book. And then we have to sneak some books back out, because they are running out of space to sleep. After we tuck them in, we dim the lights, and they flip through books. and "read" to themselves. I love that, and hope it never stops.

To make up for Saturday...

...the girls were terrors on Sunday. Terrorizing us, terrorizing each other. Whining, crying. Not listening. Not sitting in time out.

Sigh.

Saturday, they wore us out in a good way.

Sunday, they wore us out in bad way.

But I did get a few pictures of them being cute for a moment. Julie and Becca were playing choo choo train, and then Emma decided she wanted in, too.

(Note, it was a musical train... See the tamborine ("drum") and the drum beating stick? Oh, they love to beat that thing.)
